Preservation Council Reacts to Fire in Downtown Plattsmouth

The Plattsmouth Preservation Council met Monday to consider a laser scanning method to record the historic downtown district and heard an update regarding a recent fire involving four downtown buildings.

City Administrator Erv Portis said the city has received notice from the insurance company at 401 Main Street saying that the cost of rebuilding or shoring up the remaining building may not be reasonable.
He said if the insurance company proceeds with demolition, there will be hearing before preservation council.

Doug Dewey of the Preservation Board said the buildings, dating back to 1892, are important to Plattsmouth. He said they are in a historic district, so what happens to them happens to the entire district.

Plattsmouth Historian Harlan Seyfer said Plattsmouth has an architecture that is unique to a town of its size.

Seyfer: "We have now an asset of historically preserved buildings from the 1870s, '80s and '90s and a little bit later. That architecture is unique. It is a financial asset, a cultural asset and an architectural asset, of course. In my opinion, it's worth preserving."

Damaged in the fire near 401 Main Street were the Quart House Bar owned by Darlene Herdlitchka, Cass Family Medicine owned by Lee and Amy Larsen, and a jewelry store owned by Russell and Kimberly Kathol.

The preservation council heard a presentation from Optira regarding a laser scan to scientifically record the buildings on Main Street.

Seyfer said photographs are okay, but a brick-by-brick record of the historic buildings would be invaluable.
